The blade is made of high-quality Japanese laminated two-layer steel and needs to be fitted into the body of the plane with a hammer tap before first use, which also allows you to adjust the size of the shavings removed from the material. If you want to thin the shaving, simply hit the body of the plane. The thickness of the shaving and the smoothness of the surface are determined by personal adjustment of the iron. Ideally, the blade should protrude 0.05 to 0.2 mm from the body of the plane.

Japanese planes, like Japanese saws, are traditionally used by pulling towards oneself. One hand should guide the plane and the other should gently push the plane towards the material.

How to Use a Japanese Plane

Hold the Kanna with both hands - one hand holds the back part of the plane with the iron, and the other creates an L shape between the forefinger and thumb, holding the part of the plane facing the user. With the movement of your body weight, pull the Kanna towards you in smooth, elongated movements. There is no need to exert excess force, the plane should operate smoothly.

How to Adjust the Blade of a Japanese Plane

When fitting the blade, lightly tap the top part of the iron with a hammer. The blade should protrude approximately 0.05 to 0.2 mm. When removing the blade, lightly hit the top corners of the plane body with a hammer. If the right or left side of the blade protrudes too much, lightly tap on the same side as the protruding blade.

What to Watch Out For

Although a Japanese plane is not a demanding tool, for the proper function of the plane keep in mind that you must plane in the direction of the wood grain and the blade must not protrude too much. Otherwise, the Japanese plane will not function well. The Japanese plane must be adjusted before use according to individual preferences.
