How to Use a Japanese Plane

Hold the Kanna with both hands - one hand holds the rear part of the plane with the blade and the other creates an L shape between the index finger and thumb, holding the part of the plane facing the user. With the movement of your body weight, pull the Kanna towards yourself in even and stretched movements. There is no need to exert excessive force, the plane must operate smoothly.

How to Adjust the Blade of a Japanese Plane

When fitting the blade, lightly tap the top of the blade with a hammer. The blade should protrude approximately 0.05 to 0.2 mm. When removing the blade, lightly hit the upper corners of the plane's body with a hammer. If the right or left side of the blade protrudes too much, lightly tap on the same side as the protruding blade.
